Who we are
About EXTOD
EXTOD - EXercise for Type 1 Diabetes - is a research-led programme run by doctors, nurses, dietitians, researchers and people living with Type 1 diabetes. We believe that with the right advice and guidance, you can take part in exercise safely. It may not always be easy, but it is possible.

Started
A clinical research question
How do we help people with Type 1 exercise without fear of hypos?
Based in
The NHS and UK universities
NHS diabetes services and university research groups across the UK.
Funded by
NIHR Research for Patient Benefit
With additional support from partner institutions.
Mission
No one with Type 1 diabetes should be left out of sport or exercise
We work to change the things in sport, healthcare and education that hold people with Type 1 back, and to break down the barriers - fear, stigma, lack of support - that stop them being active. We do that by combining lived experience, research and strong partnerships.
Daily exercise is one of the most powerful ways to manage glucose, just behind insulin and food. Our aim is that within ten years every person with Type 1 diabetes, whatever their age or background, knows why exercise matters, how to do it safely, and who is standing with them.
How we work
Five workstreams, each led by experts in the field
Research and Development
Led by Rob Andrews
Conducting and publishing high-quality research into Type 1 diabetes and exercise, and developing the next generation of scientists in this field.
Education and Training
Led by Manyee Li and Claire Foster
Education programmes for adults, adolescents and children with Type 1, their carers, healthcare professionals, coaches and teachers - starting with the face-to-face EXTOD course.
Policy and Partnerships
Led by Alistair Lumb and Rob Andrews
Working with government bodies, sporting organisations and clubs, charities, coaches and teachers to remove barriers through policy and organisational change.
Conferences
Led by Giorgio Carrieri and Manyee Li
Conferences for healthcare professionals, people with Type 1, and the coaches and PE teachers who support them.
Engagement and Communications
Led by Paul Coker and Jerry Gore
Building the EXTOD website and the EXTOD Buddies app to connect and support people with Type 1, and raising awareness of the programme's impact.
The team
The people behind EXTOD
A clinical, dietetic and academic team across the NHS and UK universities, working with people living with Type 1 diabetes at every stage.

Where to go from here
If you live with Type 1 diabetes, start with the guides. If you support people with diabetes, start with the case for raising exercise in clinic.
